Early bird gets the worm. Right?
Right. So why are you still in bed? Don’t you wanna eat some worms? Huh? Don’t you?
“But Lucy, I like my sleep…”
Same, friend. Same.
But sleeping in doesn’t always equal more rest. I learn that the hard way, at least once a week.
I’m not a scientist.
In case you were in doubt, I’m not a scientist. I’m an artist. Those are not the same.
But look. The scientific method is freely available to everybody. There’s also this thing called “trial and error,” which is pretty helpful, if you ask me.
I get 8 hours of sleep each night. (Well, usually more like 7 and some change, but who’s counting? Other than me, of course. I’m counting.)
I get 8 hours of sleep, but I still don’t wanna get up. I have a million excuses.
“I’m still tired…”
“I’m warm…”
“It’s cold out there…”
“Ten more minutes…”
“I don’t need that much time to get ready…”
And you know what? Every time I snuggle until I literally can’t anymore–and I have to run out the door within five minute–I am still frickin tired. It takes me forever to wake up. And I’m grumpy. And I hate everything.
Every. Frickin. Time.
But when I force myself to wake up? It’s not so bad. I mean, it SUCKS at first. Like, really sucks. I hate it. Especially in the winter. But within a few minutes, I’m up and at ’em. I don’t hate everything. I’m not grumpy forever, just for a bit. And you know what, there are only so many hours in a day. I’d rather get stuff done when the lights are on outside, you know?
It will suck.
Did I mention that it will suck?
Because yeah. It will suck at first.
But it gets easier. It gets better. I used to think I couldn’t go to bed early, but it just took some time.
And I’m still not great at getting up. I need accountability. In fact, one of my friends drives to school with me early so that I have to get up earlier. But I’m improving. Somedays it’s easier, some days it’s harder.
That’s what sucks about most things that take time: they take time.
It won’t suck forever.
In the grand scheme of things, getting out of bed isn’t the worst. Sure–maybe there are a bunch of menial tasks you have to do that day. There’s also the rest of life. It’s not all bad.
Take it one day at a time. You don’t need to beat yourself up every time you snooze an alarm. That’s not helping anyone. Just remember that it’s your life. Dreams are sweet, but you can’t live there forever.
And yeah, I’m talking to me too. If it sounds like I’m pickin’ on you, just know that I’m pickin’ on me too.
“Let them eat worms.” I’m pretty sure that’s what Marie Antoinette said.
Yeah.
Let’s eat some worms.
Oh, I love that song! Unlike my friends from The Company, though, I never heard it in the context of…
So glad to hear that, Mattie! You're welcome for the reminder.
Hi Judy! I'll be staying in Cambridge :-)
I have the same Neverland feeling about Regina Spektor's "The Call". It was SUCH a powerful song to me when…
Wow Lucy, this hits home for me! I hate endings and uncertain futures. But thinking about eternity is a blessing…
