Cars are people too.

“That’s… that’s an odd thing to say, Lucy.”

Ok—cars aren’t literally people. I know that. But what if they were? What if they had personalities? Faces? Drama?

Why should you care?

Because we take these simple joys for granted.

If you can find a glimpse of fun in bad Friday traffic, how much more fun will you find in a slow day at work? Or in a seemingly routine day around the house? You’re more creative than you think…

Seeing the faces.

I’m from California. Los Angeles. Traffic is a nightmare. I know I’m not the only one who’s ever been stuck on the freeway, staring at the taillights of the guy in front of me while it seems like the entire population of L.A. is trying to merge.

After a few stagnant minutes, those tail lights start to look at you funny. The bumper turns into a goofy smile.

It’s that simple.

There’s something so human about seeing faces in objects. Everybody does it—at least, I assume they do. But it’s something we take for granted. I mean, how cool is it that we, as humans, can look at a pair of tail lights and a bumper and make it a face?

That’s so cool!

You did that! With your brain! Chances are you didn’t even need to look that hard to do it, either.

I know it’s silly, and it’s simple, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth smiling about.

You have a relationship with your car.

It’s true—you do!

Driving can be stressful. Car upkeep can be expensive. If you live in the city, chances are you’re stuck in the car for half your day. That’s a lot of time—a lot of hours with your car. Why not embrace it?

My car is named Satine.

No, not after Duchess Satine from Star Wars.

Yes, after Nichole Kidman’s character in Moulin Rouge. Why? Because she’s the most beautiful gal in the world and yet I live in constant fear that she’s gonna die on me. Too soon? My friends are new to that movie—they might not be ready for that joke…

So…what’s the point of naming her and all that?

Simple: it’s funny. When I refuel, I say Satine’s thirsty. It makes getting gas more fun. When she struggles up the driveway, I say her name like a disappointed mother. It’s funny.

Any chance you have to inject fun into your day, I say go for it! When it’s as easy as naming your car, what’s stopping you?

You can make simple things fun.

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again.

There are so many ways to infect your routine with wonder. Giving car’s personalities is just the easiest, I think. I bet you already have opinions on what your car is like!

So next time you’re driving to work, or get stuck in afternoon traffic, don’t fret.

Inspiration is surrounding you on all sides.
