Obviously, I’m not implying that I’m keeping a live fox in my dresser. Calm down.*

Sometimes, you look at a thing and see something else. You get a little glimpse into a world that isn’t there— see a face where there isn’t one. I’ve mentioned before that I like seeing faces in cars.

I saw the fox once and now I can’t unsee it. So, I thought: why not doodle it? If you read until the end, you’ll get to see my little doodle…as long as we both agree to ignore the messy state of my room. Sound good? Perfect.

So yeah, there’s a fox in my dresser.

He’s cartoony and made up of drawers—especially the one in the middle, which doesn’t like to close all the way without screaming like fingernails down a chalkboard. His nose is big and he wears a sweatband around his ears. I don’t think he’s very smart…he just kind of stares into space.

…so what?

Other than a silly picture in my head (or a doodle on my iPad) what could I possibly get out of seeing a cartoon character in a chest of drawers?

A little bit of wonder goes a long way.

I’m in my bedroom every day. I sleep, work, and procrastinate there. Sometimes it can feel like a really dull set of walls.

That’s why there’s something relaxing about finding imaginary faces in a familiar room. I see a face in the ceiling paint and suddenly I’m smiling to myself; I see a fox in my dresser and suddenly my room feels a lot more cozy.

Being able to see unordinary things in ordinary objects is a gift. It’s such a weird thing that us humans can do, yet it goes unnoticed so much of the time.

Is there something in your bedroom that has a face of its own? What about your kitchen? It’s silly things like this that spur on my creativity.

And here’s a thought--if we can smile at something as simple as a piece of hand-me-down furniture, how much more do you think God smiles at us? We’re so much more than an imaginary face–we’re His creation!

Well, you made it this far…

So here’s a picture of my dresser:

Do you see the fox? Hey–stop looking at the mess. You promised me you wouldn’t…

What about now:

What a silly little guy.

Should he have a name? Should I put away my laundry properly? The answer to one of those is definitely yes.
